The gaming industry is undergoing a major shift with the rise of new platforms and technologies. While some companies are struggling to adapt, others are thriving in the shifting landscape.
The riot games sexism lawsuit is a recent lawsuit that has been filed against Riot Games. It alleges that the company had an institutional problem of sexism and misogyny, which resulted in their game’s community being hostile to women.
It’s time for another collection of MMO and MMO-related business news.
Discord: Investors love to pour money into Discord, and the chat startup that gamers know best has received another $500 million in its current financing round. This puts the company’s worth at $15 billion, considerably more than the estimated $10 billion Microsoft sought to pay during earlier this year’s talks.
Bungie: Do you recall when former Destiny composer Martin O’Donnell sued Bungie for attempting to unlawfully strip O’Donnell of his interests in the business and deny him his shareholder rights after he was fired from the studio? O’Donnell won, and then reappeared in the headlines a few years later with a lot to say about Bungie’s relationship with Activision-Blizzard. Now, he’s back in the spotlight thanks to a contempt of court ruling; according to the terms of the original lawsuit, O’Donnell was prohibited from sharing and performing music and materials related to the game, but he did so in 2019, leading to the finding – and an order that he pay Bungie “reasonable costs” for the suit. Bungie made a $100,000 demand. We’ll see what happens.
Harassment: The Anti-Defamation League and Newzoo released their annual harassment in gaming study this week, and it seems to indicate yet another increase in harassment complaints against women and BIPOC, especially Black and Asian gamers. “The ADL’s study showed that harassment experienced by adult gamers rose and continues at dangerously high levels for the third year in a row, while fresh data on the experience of adolescents also raises major concerns,” says the ADL.
